he origins of the 30-year history of the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Science date back to the late 1980s and were very modest.
The Electronics Department at Racławicka Street (1989–1991)
In 1989, the Department of Electronics was established within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, originating from the Department of Computer Science Basics, which had existed within the Faculty of Civil Engineering from 1978 to 1989. Its staff included Dr. Krzysztof Wawryn, Dr. Henryk Budzisz, and Dr. Elżbieta Filipow-Ciskowska.
The newly created Department of Electronics, headed by Prof. Andrzej Guziński, initially employed seven people: Dr. Henryk Budzisz (Deputy Head), Dr. Krzysztof Wawryn, Dr. Elżbieta Filipow-Ciskowska, Dr. Andrzej Muszyński, as well as Renata Grabowska and Barbara Dowgielewicz.
Institute of Electronics at Partyzantów Street 17 (1991–2002)
The department quickly began to grow, with new staff members such as Artur Wezgraj, Dr. Andrzej Serkiz, and Dr. Eugeniusz Polowy joining. This ten-person team laid the foundation for the future Institute of Electronics, and later the Faculty of Electronics.
In 1989, the Department of Electronics within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering gained the authority to conduct master's degree studies in Electronics and Telecommunications. On January 18, 1991, by the Rector's directive (Prof. Zdzisław Piątek), the Institute of Electronics was established, replacing the previous department.
Entrance Exams for Studies, 1991
The position of Institute Director was entrusted to Prof. Andrzej Guziński, with Dr. Andrzej Muszyński (until April 30, 1992) and later Prof. Krzysztof Wawryn (from May 1, 1992) as Deputy Directors for Education. Two years later, the Institute of Electronics was separated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and transformed into an independent unit with faculty rights by the Senate of the Higher School of Engineering (WSInż) on September 15, 1993. The Senate also directed the institute to seek the establishment of a full Faculty of Electronics.
The first Director of the independent Institute of Electronics was Prof. Andrzej Guziński, supported by Deputy Directors Dr. Stefan Bartkiewicz (Education) and Prof. Henryk Budzisz (Science). The institute employed 13 professors, 9 assistant professors, and 18 assistants. Two degree programs were launched: Electronics and Telecommunications (179 students enrolled) and Automation and Robotics (30 students enrolled).
The institute's growth was accompanied by significant achievements. In 1993, Prof. Krzysztof Wawryn became Vice-Rector for Research and held the position until 1999, later serving as Rector of the Koszalin University of Technology (1999–2005). Other milestones include Prof. Michał Białko’s honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Toulouse (1995) and the Gdańsk University of Technology (2008), and Dr. Artur Wezgraj's appointment as Administrative Director in 2002.
Opening of the Computing Center in 1998
The institute expanded as the university sought to elevate its status from a Higher School of Engineering to a Polytechnic. On March 16, 1994, the Senate restructured the institute into new departments: Computer Engineering, Electronic Components and Measurement, Signal Processing Systems, and Circuit and System Theory.
The first graduates left the institute in 1994, with Leszek Bychto defending the first master's thesis. Bychto later became the first doctoral graduate in 2001.
Transformation into the Faculty of Electronics in 1997
On June 23, 1997, the Minister of National Education, Jerzy Wiatr, issued a directive converting the Institute of Electronics into the Faculty of Electronics. That same year, the faculty began postgraduate studies in Computer Science, offering courses for professionals and teachers.
In 1998, two faculty members, Prof. Krzysztof Wawryn and Prof. Włodzimierz Janke, received the title of Professor of Technical Sciences.
On June 22, 1998, the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles granted the faculty the right to confer doctoral degrees in Electronics.
Growth and Development (1999–2004)
The first doctoral defense took place in 1999, with Artur Wezgraj earning the title of Doctor of Technical Sciences.
In 2002, the faculty was granted the right to conduct master's studies in Computer Science. Following the death of Dean Prof. Andrzej Guziński in 2001, Prof. Henryk Budzisz took over as Dean until 2008.
In 2003, the faculty moved to its new premises at Śniadeckich Street 2. The Faculty of Electronics and Computer Science hosted the 14th National Conference of Deans of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Science Faculties in 2004.
Modernization and Accreditation (2005–2019)
In 2005, construction began on new faculty laboratories, funded by the Ministry of National Education and the European Union. The laboratories opened in 2006.
The faculty achieved positive evaluations from the Polish Accreditation Commission in 2006 (Computer Science) and 2009 (Electronics and Telecommunications).
By 2019, the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Science had conferred 33 doctoral degrees in Technical Sciences and facilitated several doctoral proceedings for its staff.
Reorganization and Current Structure
In 2019, the faculty reorganized, transforming departments into institutes. Today, the faculty includes the Institute of Electronics, Computer Engineering, and Signal Processing, among others.
The faculty continues its mission of excellence in education and research, adapting to modern standards and collaborating internationally to prepare students for the challenges of a dynamic, technology-driven world.
